Grainger wins third game of the week; defeats Volunteer

CHURCH HILL – Grainger hit a combined eight doubles in Wednesday’s game at Volunteer and that propelled the Grizzlies to an 8-4 road victory.

It has been a good week for the Grizzlies at the plate as they have combined for 36 hits in three games against Cherokee and Volunteer. Wednesday’s game may have been the most impressive of the three as nine of the 12 hits Grainger had were extra-base knocks. Brayden Christian led the way with three doubles and Brady Smith had two. Also getting the two-base hit were Landon Dalton, Braylnn Sell and Jaxon Maxey.

Dalton had the hottest bat of all as he was a homer away from hitting for the cycle as he went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Smith also drove in two runs for the Grizzlies. Cadon Cameron picked up the win for Grainger as he went five innings with three strikeouts. Gavin Yates got the save as he hurled the final two innings with one hit allowed and four strikeouts.

Things started out about as badly as they could have for the Grizz as Volunteer scored four runs in the bottom of the first. Undaunted, Grainger went right to work to cut into the lead. Maxey produced the first run as his double to left brought Dalton home and Bryson Davis’ single allowed Maxey to score. Smith doubled in the third as Christian came home and then Dalton’s three-bagger scored Smith and Sell as the Grizz grabbed a 5-4 lead, one they would not relinquish. Smith’s second double of the afternoon plated Christian in the fifth and Smith scored on a wild pitch, also in the fifth. The final run of the contest for Grainger came in the sixth when Christian doubled to center to bring Lucas around for the 8-4 final tally.

The Grizzlies return home for a game against Jefferson County on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at The Den.
