East baseball struggles in run-rule loss to Sevier County

SEVIERVILLE – Sevier County scored four in the first, three in the second and five in the third on Tuesday evening as they swept a two-game series from Morristown East with a 12-0 victory.
With the loss, East dropped to 0-10 on the season and 0-4 in District 2-4A play.
It was a struggle on both sides of things, as the ‘Canes managed just one hit in the game. Sevier County’s Brady Scott pitched a complete game, striking out 10.
“Credit to (Brady) Scott,” East coach J.D. Newsom said. “He is the definition of a pitcher. He’s been like that since he was a freshman. He just gets up there and pitches. He added a little velo this year. He kept us guessing at the plate.
“We didn’t play terrible defensively. We had some guys in some spots that they weren’t used to. We just have to have better approaches at the plate and fill up the strike zone on the mound. We’ll get back after it tomorrow and get ready for Thursday.”
On the mound for the ‘Canes, Carson Winstead got the start. Winstead threw 2.1 innings before Ethan O’Dowd pitched the rest of the way. O’Dowd allowed a two-RBI double and two-run homer to the first two batters he faced but allowed just one hit after that, getting two outs in the third and three in the fourth.
At the plate, East’s lone hit came from Isaac Greene in the top of the fourth. However, the very next batter grounded into a double-play. The only other baserunners for the ‘Canes came in the first when Eli Seals reached on an error and in the fourth on an Ethan Shockley walk.
Morristown East will jump back into district play next Monday and Tuesday when they take on cross-town rival Morristown West. However, before that they will play a game against Chuckey-Doak on Thursday at 5 p.m, two games on Friday against Grainger and University High and one on Saturday when they travel to South Greene.
For Newsom, he was quick to answer on what he wanted to see from the guys the next four games before next Monday.
“Confidence,” Newsom said. “The rest of the week, that’s all it’s about. We’re in that space where we’re not playing horrible, we had one error tonight, but we’re not playing great. Once we put it all together and get a little confidence behind us and win a ballgame or two, we’ll be able to go out there and perform like we should.”
