Jean Johnson Hale

Jean Johnson Hale, age 88, passed away peacefully on February 28, 2023 at Deerfield Episcopal Retirement Center in Asheville, North Carolina. She was born on November 23,

1934 in Omaha, Nebraska, before moving to Morristown, Tennessee in 1940 with her parents, Robert William Johnson and Hazel White Johnson, and her brother, John Robert Johnson.

In 1993, she married William McCanless Hale and happily returned to her beloved hometown, Morristown.

Jean was a kind and compassionate soul who always put others before herself. Her infinite capacity to listen and make people everywhere feel loved and appreciated served as a hallmark of her life.

She built lasting friendships and co-founded and committed to many charitable organizations.

Among her contributions and accomplishments, she served as board member of Girls, Inc., the Morristown Chamber of Commerce, Rose Center, Council for the Arts, the Morristown[1]Hamblen Library, Read 2000, and Morristown Hamblen Central Services. She was a co-founder of CEASE (spouse abuse service) and the Rose Service Guild. She also served as a long-time member of Morristown’s First Presbyterian Church. Jean was a recipient of the Joe Q. Dougherty Volunteer of the Year Award sponsored by the United Way of Hamblen County, and a member of the AK Chapter of P.E.O., a philanthropic, educational organization.

Jean is survived by her son, Steve Stine (Anne) of Bali, Indonesia; her daughter, Laura SSK Khalsa of Cottonwood AZ and by her granddaughters Maddie Stine, Becca Stine and Kayla Fuller. Also surviving are her brother, John Johnson (Margie) of Roanoke VA, their children Rob and Martha and their spouses and children. Her five devoted stepsons William, Tom, Mike, David and Rob Hale and their wives, children, and grandchildren survive her. Jean’s kind heart and gentle spirit will live on through the memories and lives of all those she

touched.

A service to remember Jean’s life will be held in the Memorial Garden at St. Giles Chapel on the Deerfield campus in Asheville, NC at 11 a.m. on May 20, 2023. The family will receive friends at the Chapel one hour prior to the service. In lieu of sending flowers, friends may send donations to the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown TN, The Episcopal Relief and Development Fund through St. Giles Chapel or to a cause of their choosing.
