In a rescheduled meeting from last week due to flooding concerns, the Hawkins County Board of Education mowed through its agenda Wednesday afternoon.

Mount Carmel Elementary School, who has earned Reward School status for two consecutive years, had a big part in the meeting, with students opening the meeting with the pledge of allegiance. Principal Amy Glass was named Hawkins County “Principal of the Year.”

“I wanted to bring special attention to them,” Director of Schools Matt Hixson said. “It took us awhile to get their group here to perform, but we wanted to recognize them publicly.”

In recognizing Glass, Hixson asked for the teaching staff to come forward, as well.

“You’re a driver, a visionary and you do great things with your students and staff,” Hixson said. “It’s very appropriate to reward you with the county principal of the year award.”

Glass was humbled by the award, but shared credit with her teachers and staff members.

“I would not be principal of the year without these people here leading the way,” Glass said, recognizing her teachers and staff. “They are wonderful, our students are wonderful and their parents are wonderful. We’re just thankful for our wonderful community. It takes a village and we appreciate it. Every single person in the building makes us who we are. We’re proud of them.”

The second-grade class performed two songs from the musical “Lemonade” that was staged last week.

Mount Carmel’s cafeteria staff was also recognized for the cafeteria’s 100 score on the latest health department inspection.

“Without your support, we can’t have successful schools,” Hixson said. “Thank you very much for your support behind the scenes.”

“This is an example on how teachers can have an impact on students,” Board Chairman Chris Christian said. “This is just evidence of the support of teachers. Very well said.”

Hawkins County Schools will host a job fair from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m., Thursday, March 30 at the Charles Fuller Board Room of the Hawkins County Bus Shop on East Main Street in Rogersville. This will feature representatives from the county system, as well as the individual school sites.

“We started recruiting early under Teresa Drinnon’s leadership very early in the system in order to get good candidates locked down soon,” Hixson said. “That has benefitted us in the past and this year is no exception.”

Following the job fair, there will be a preliminary budget workshop at 6 p.m., March 30.

Students attending Volunteer’s boys games at next week’s state basketball tournament will be granted an excused absence if they show a ticket stub showing they went. The Falcons will play Tuesday at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro.
