The Rose Center was brimming with talent and activity Tuesday evening as AP art students from East High gathered to showcase their work for a student led art show.
Students taking this AP art class will submit a total of 15 art pieces to the College Board in May for their final exam and will then have the opportunity to earn college art credit.
The students chose three pieces to display and discuss at the exhibit Tuesday and submitted their work with themes ranging from hobbies to religion and personal struggle. Junior Maddie Helton displayed some poignant self portraits and said she is heavily influenced as an artist by her sister-in-law, Samantha Helton who is the art teacher at Westview Middle School.
Sophomore Ruby Rangel, flanked by her proud mother, displayed a handmade altar for her late grandmother complete with hand sculpted items and a watercolor painting.
Jennifer Stewart, the art teacher for East High, beamed with pride as she made her rounds encouraging each student along the way.
Stewart said, “I am immensely proud of each student for all they have accomplished. I am continually amazed by their approaches and willingness to take a risk.”
Parents and appreciators mingled as they admired the different pieces, offering students the opportunity to talk about their work and discuss what inspired them. Stewart said, “Tonight was a chance to celebrate with family, friends, teachers and the community about the remarkable talent of everyone.”
