Coffey’s 29 points leads Washburn past Cosby

Cosby’s unbelievable 67 game district win streak came to an end on Tuesday night as Braelyn Coffey dropped in 29 points to lead Washburn past Cosby, 53-52.

Coffey was dominant throughout the game for Washburn with 10 in the first quarter, seven in the second quarter, two in the third quarter and 10 more in the fourth quarter.

Along with Coffey, Saylor Clay added 11 points while Megan Beeler had six points. Other scorers for Washburn were Ebany Hill with four points and Hannah Williams with three points.

On Cosby’s side, Shylee Shelton became the youngest player in Cosby history to record 1,000 career points, totalling 21 points in Tuesday’s game. Other scorers for Cosby were Alexis McGaha with 12, Ariel Ottinger with nine, Katie Myers with five, Ali Smith with four and Chloe Hance.

It was a phenomenal start for Washburn as they broke out to a 14-3 lead after one quarter thanks to Coffey’s 10 points. Clay and Williams scored the other four points for Washburn, while Ottinger scored all three points for Cosby.

In the second, Washburn added 10 more points but saw Cosby score 19 to cut the lead to 24-19 at the half. Shelton had five points in the quarter for Cosby while Smith added four.

The third quarter was a low-scoring affair that saw Cosby continue to cut into the lead and make it a one-point game at 30-29 heading to the fourth. Shelton scored five for Cosby while Ottinger had four.

In the fourth, Shelton tried her hardest to keep Cosby’s streak alive with 11 points in the fourth quarter. However, Coffey had 10 while Beeler hit two critical 3-pointers to give Washburn the one-point win.
