Lady Trojans struggle offensively; fall to Sevier County

SEVIERVILLE – Morristown West managed just six points combined in the second and third quarters on Friday night against Sevier County, as the Bearettes took the victory 51-32.

With the loss, Morristown West finished the district schedule with a 2-4 record. They will be the No. 3 seed in the district tournament and will take on No. 2 Morristown East in two weeks in the first round at Sevier County.

“We hit a couple shots early but they answered back, and we just couldn’t hit a shot after,” Morristown West coach Johnny Galyon said. “I thought it played into what we were doing on offense, defense, inbounds, just everything. That’s what we talked about after. We can’t let our shooting dictate all other aspects of the game. We’ll get better, and we’ll fix it.”

Aubrie Messer led the way for West with 10 points while Jhaniya Mitchell added nine points. Other scorers for the Lady Trojans were Mia Dinkins with six, Delaney Weddington with four and Kalyssa Dinkins with three.

Sevier County was led by Hailey Williams with 16 points.

It was the defensive effort from Sevier County that led the way, as they forced turnovers that led to easy baskets in transition.

“They extended and played a lot of good matchups,” Galyon said. “I didn’t feel like we played the way we have the last week and a half or so. Give them credit for that. Their defense was really good tonight.”

Sevier County came out firing to start with the first seven points of the game, but West immediately answered back with seven points of their own. Mitchell and Messer scored while Mia Dinkins added a 3-pointer.

However, Sevier County scored seven of the last 10 points to lead 17-10. The lone bucket from West during the run was a 3-pointer by Kalyssa Dinkins.

In the second, it was a defensive battle with 13 total points scored. Nine of those points were from the Bearettes as they led 26-14 at the half. Weddington scored both baskets for West in the second.

Any chance of a West comeback was put to rest in the third as the Bearettes scored the first nine points of the quarter. Messer broke the streak, but Sevier County scored one last time and led 37-16.

In the fourth, West doubled their point total as Mitchell had seven points and Messer had six. The other three points came on a Mia Dinkins 3-pointer. Sevier County added 14 points in the quarter for the victory.

Morristown West will have their final regular season game on Thursday night as they host Unicoi County. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
