Four score in double figures as Lady Trojans top Volunteer

B

Two freshmen and two sophomores led the charge for Morristown West on Tuesday evening as the Lady Trojans easily took down Volunteer, 67-36.

The win improved West’s record to 14-9 overall as the Lady Trojans got revenge on a previous early season loss.

Freshman Kalyssa Dinkins led the charge for West in the game with 14 while Sophomore Delaney Weddington added 13. Both Jhaniya Mitchell and Aubrie Messer scored 10 points.

“It was kind of a slow start, but as the game went on I thought we ran the floor well,” Morristown West coach Johnny Galyon said. “I thought we really shared the ball well, especially in the second half. Our defense is really doing well now, too. We’re pressuring the ball where we’re supposed to.

“Kalyssa (Dinkins) led us in scoring as a freshman. That’s pretty good. We’ve got two freshmen and two sophomores on the floor for the majority of the minutes. That’s pretty promising.”

Other scorers for Morristown West were Kaylee Dyke with eight points, Mia Dinkins with six points, Gracie Bunch with four points and Cadence Beaver with two points.

While the offensive side was solid for West on Tuesday, so was the defensive end of the court as the Lady Trojans were solid in their press, creating turnovers that led to some easy baskets.

“We’ve got some guards now that are starting to understand (how to press defensively),” Galyon said. “Those guards have grown throughout the year, so we’re pretty comfortable playing them for a little bit.”

It was a slower start for both teams as Mia Dinkins hit the first bucket of the game almost two minutes in. The two teams traded buckets until the 2:55 mark when West scored the final nine points of the quarter to lead 16-6. Kalyssa Dinkins converted a 3-point play during the run while Mitchell scored the final six points.

In the second quarter, West scored 16 more points as they led 32-20 at the half. Dyke and Kalyssa Dinkins each had five points in the quarter while Bunch added four points.

Any chance of a Volunteer comeback was put to rest midway through the third quarter as West went on a 13-5 run to end the quarter and led 48-28. Messer and Weddington each had four points in the third while Kalyssa Dinkins and Dyke both hit a three.

The fourth quarter was more of the same for West, scoring 19 more points to secure the win. Weddington had seven points in the final eight minutes while Mitchell added four.

Morristown West will be back in action on Friday as they travel to Sevier County. Tip is set for 6 p.m.
