All three competitors read their essays to the Samuel Doak Chapter members of the Daughters of the American Revolution at their Thursday meeting at First United Methodist Church’s Cornerstone building. West High School Counselor Renae Byrd, East High School Counselor Mary Seals and Grainger High School Counselor Rachel Harris were also in attendance to lend support to their students.
The title of the essay was, “Our American Heritage and our Responsibility for Preserving it.” The focus question was “How will the essential actions of a good citizen (dependability, service, leadership, and patriotism) meet the challenges that America faces in this decade?”
The students each received a Good Citizen Certificate, a DAR Good Citizen Pin, a wallet recognition card, and a check. Parker Stansell was selected as the Samuel Doak Chapter Winner and her essay has been sent to the Tennessee State Good Citizen chairman.
