Morristown West came out with something to prove Tuesday night as they defeated Northview Academy, 53-45.

After a tough loss Friday night against Sevier County, the Lady Trojans were playing with a purpose. The win advanced their record to 12-7 on the season.

Sophomore Delaney Weddington led her team with 21 points, followed by freshman Jhaniya Mitchell with 16. The two underclassmen scored over half of Morristown West’s points for the night.

“Jhaniya and Delaney both had really big offensive games for us,” West head coach Johnny Galyon said.

Other scorers included Kaylee Dyke with six, Mia Dinkins, Aubrie Messer and Cadence Beaver with three each and Kalyssa Dinkins with two.

The Lady Trojans began the contest with two easy 3-pointers by Dyke, with others chipping in to get some buckets. The Lady Trojans ended the quarter with a 12-6 lead against the Lady Cougars.

Northview stepped up to the plate in the second quarter, outscoring West by three. The competition stiffened up, with West ahead by three at the end of the half, 28-25.

“I thought we did a good job in the first half on defense, especially early in the half,” Galyon said.

Weddington helped put her team back on track by scoring eight in the third quarter with Kalyssa Dinkins and Mitchell each putting up two points. Shots stayed consistent in the third from both teams. West led at the end of the third, 40-34.

The Lady Cougars were only behind three points with less than four minutes left in the contest. Beaver responded with a quick three-pointer to secure a lead for West, followed by five free-throw baskets from West to end the game with an eight-point lead, 53-45.

“We handled the ball a bit better against the press and hit the shots when we needed to,” Galyon said about the win. “We’re still young, we’ve got to continue to work.”

West ended up leading all 32 minutes of the game, and outscoring Northview in the first, third and fourth quarters.

The Lady Trojans will travel to Jefferson County on Friday and take on the Lady Patriots. Galyon expressed that this road game will not be a walk in the park.

“It’s gonna be tough, so we’ve got to be mentally tough. We’ve got to be ready to go,” Galyon said. “Hopefully we get the same results that we got tonight.”

Friday’s tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
