Lady Trojans comeback falls short against Sevier County

MORRISTOWN — A late third quarter comeback was not enough on Friday night as the Lady Trojans fell to the Sevier County Bearettes, 57–41.

West fell to 1-2 in district play with the loss.

Five girls put points on the board for West, led by sophomores Delaney Weddington with 19 and Aubrie Messer with 11. Jhaniya Mitchell dropped seven points, along with Kaylee Dyke and Mikaela Olodey each putting in two.

“We’ve got a young team,” Lady Trojans head coach Johnny Galyon said. “The sky is the limit for us honestly ’cause we’re so young.”

West struggled at the start of the game, scoring only six points in the first quarter. Messer scored four, while Weddington chipped in two. Sevier County ended the quarter with a 13–6 lead.

Other Trojans got points on the board in the second quarter, but the Bearettes continued to lead. West needed a spark after the half, with Sevier leading 30–19.

A spark is exactly what West found in the third quarter. West outscored Sevier by three points in the third, bringing the score to only a 7-point deficit of 41–33.

“We just talked at halftime about taking care of the basketball, which is kind of uncharacteristic because I think we’ve done a pretty good job taking care of the basketball,” Galyon said.

Sevier scored consistently and kept the lead throughout the whole game, and West couldn’t keep up with the runs. West was outscored in the fourth quarter by eight points, securing Sevier’s win.

Morristown West will look for a win on Tuesday as they host Northview Academy. Tip-off is set for 6 p.m.
