Veda V. Sumpter, age 79, of Morristown, passed away Monday, January 2, 2023 at Morristown-Hamblen Healthcare System.

She was saved at an early age and was a faithful member of Morristown Baptist Tabernacle. She was employed at H & R Block for many years. Veda was a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother and will be dearly missed.

She was preceded in death by her husband, David Sumpter; parents, Hobart and Alice Owens; brother, Obie Owens; and sisters, Mary Ellen Bays and Helen Sumpter.

She is survived by her daughters and sons-in-law, Wanda and Barry Childress, Donna and Jonathan Shelton, and Beverly and Jim Hunt; grandchildren, Selena (Greg) Hayes, Charles (Beth) Bearden, Dawson Hunt, and Isabella Hunt; great-grandchildren, Arianna Hayes, Alexis Bearden, and Olivia Bearden; and brother, Mathis Owens.

The family will receive friends from 5 – 8 p.m. Wednesday, January 4th at Westside Chapel Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at 8 p.m. with Pastor Doug Benton officiating.

Family and friends will meet at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 5th at Hamblen Memory Gardens for graveside services.
