Morristown Utilities celebrates 20 Years of FiberNET and honors loyal customers

Morristown Utilities is celebrating the 20th anniversary of FiberNET this month, marking two decades of delivering reliable, high-speed broadband and telecommunications services to the Morristown community.

Launched in 2006, FiberNET was created to give residents and businesses a better local option for cable television, internet, and communications services. What began as a response to limited choices and rising costs quickly became a community-focused investment in Morristown’s future. From the beginning, FiberNET was built on the belief that fast, dependable internet access should be an essential service for every customer. Local leadership recognized early that economic development, education, healthcare, and everyday life would increasingly depend on strong digital connectivity.

Interim General Manager Clark Rucker said, “It has been very exciting to be part of Morristown Utilities and the community, transforming a tool to lower cable rates into a telecommunications service essential to our growth and success. It will be even more exciting to watch FiberNET continue to grow to meet the community’s evolving telecommunications needs in the future.”

Over the past 20 years, FiberNET has continually evolved to meet customer needs. By 2012, the system was providing gigabitlevel internet speeds, placing Morristown among an elite group of communities nationwide with advanced fiber capabilities. Most recently, a 100 Gigabit upgrade has further strengthened the network and positioned FiberNET to support future technologies for years to come.

FiberNET has also played a major role in supporting local economic growth over the years. Businesses across many industries rely on dependable broadband to operate, expand, and compete. Families and students depend on FiberNET for streaming, remote work, virtual learning, and staying connected every day.

Telecom Operations Manager Jordan Partin added, “FiberNET made a great first impression on my family and me 16 years ago when we moved to the Morristown area. They got our service connected quickly, which was exactly what we needed at the time. I’m grateful to do my part in continuing to show our community that the services important to them are important to us.”

As part of the anniversary celebration, MU recognized 3 of its longest-standing FiberNET customers by awarding free internet service for one year.

These loyal FiberNET residential customers have been with the service since its earliest days. Kelly Bowen, Vera Cosson, and Rebecca Thompson were all honored with a certificate and free internet for one year for carrying FiberNET services for 20 years. Their services were connected on May 30, 2006.

Partin continued, “I am honored that Kelly, Vera, Rebecca and many others have trusted us as their telecommunications provider for decades. We look forward to continuing to earn that trust with them and many more.”

“FiberNET has become an important part of our community’s infrastructure,” said Rucker. “We are grateful to the customers who believed in this service from the beginning and helped make these past 20 years possible.”

As FiberNET enters its next chapter, Morristown Utilities remains committed to innovation, reliability, and serving the growing telecommunications needs of the community.
