Jeff County drops district games to Sevier County
Jeff County fell twice to Sevier County on Friday evening in conference play. The Lady Patriots dropped a 44-33 contest while the boys fell 46-37.
With the loss, both Jeff County teams fell to 0-2 in conference play.
On the girls side, Madi Hawk led the way with 14 points while MaKenzie Alvey added 10 points. Other scorers for the Lady Patriots were Brooke Satterfield with six, Caroline Loveday with two and Maddie Richardson with one.
Jeff County trailed 11-7 after the first quarter but scored just five points in the second quarter as they trailed 23-12.
In the second half, Hawk had seven points but the Lady Pats still trailed by 10 going to the fourth. While Jeff County scored 11 in the fourth, it was not enough for a comeback.
On the boys side, Talan Higgins led the way for Jeff County with 12 points while Cy Mincey had seven. Other scorers for the Patriots were Vontez McCray with six, Kip Parker with four, Jacob Shrader and Tyler Jackson with three each and Kohl Bonura with two.
The Patriots trailed by just four at the half but it was a five-point third quarter that allowed Sevier County to pull ahead and secure the win.
Cupp leads Claiborne to win over Cumberland Gap
Ethan Cupp poured in 32 points on Friday night for Claiborne as the Bulldogs picked up a 63-52 win over Cumberland Gap.
Cupp scored 14 points in the first half and added 18 more in the second half.
Other scorers for Claiborne were Brennan Fugate with 13, Tyler Myatt with eight, Vince Bolton with four and Jake Smith, Bradey Hamlin and Evan Thomas each with two.
It was a slow start for the Bulldogs in the game as Cumberland Gap led 18-10 after one. In the second, Cupp got things going with 10 points as Claiborne cut the lead to 29-26 at the break.
The third quarter saw Claiborne open up a nine-point lead with 20 points at 46-37. Cupp had eight in the third while Fugate added six.
In the fourth, Cupp poured in 10 more points as Claiborne eased to the 11-point victory.
Claiborne will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to take on Grainger.
Washburn drops close game to Gibbs
Braelyn Coffey scored 19 points while Saylor Clay added 15 on Friday for Washburn but the Lady Pirates fell just short against Gibbs, 48-45.
With the loss, Washburn fell to 12-8 on the season.
Other scorers for Washburn along with Coffey and Clay were Callie Nicley with five, Megan Beeler with three, Hannah Williams with two and Ebany Hill with one.
Coffey opened up things for Washburn with eight points in the first quarter, but Gibbs led 15-13 after one.
In the second, Washburn scored just nine points but held Gibbs to six as they led 22-21.
The third quarter was an offensive explosion from Gibbs as they scored 18 to go up five heading to the fourth. Washburn scored just 10 in the fourth as they could not complete the comeback for the win.
Washburn will be back in action on Tuesday as they travel to take on Cosby in a district matchup.
