Shelton, Coffey named District Co-Players of the Year; Bishop named Coach of the Year

Cosby’s Shylee Shelton and Washburn’s Braelyn Coffey were named District 2-A Co-Players of the Year on Monday, while Washburn coach Daniel Bishop was named Coach of the Year.

Shelton earned the honor after averaging 20 points and seven rebounds per game. Shelton had seven games on the season scoring over 30 points and became the youngest player in Cosby history to reach 1,000 career points.

For Coffey, she earned the honor after averaging 18 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Coffey scored over 20 points 11 times on the season and became the all-time leading scorer in Washburn history after a 24-point game against Hancock County.

For Bishop, he was named Coach of the Year after leading Washburn to a historic season. Washburn finished the regular season at 20-10, breaking the school record for wins in a season. The Lady Pirates tied for the District Regular Season Title and defeated Cosby for the first time in school history, last week.

Washburn and Cosby also had three players make the All-District team. For the Lady Pirates, Saylor Clay, Rylie Nicely and Megan Beeler were all named to the team while Katie Myers, Ali Smith and Kinley Coggins made the team for Cosby.

Hancock County also had two make the All-District team in Reagan Collins and Madiline Dalton.

The District 2-A Tournament begins on Friday at Washburn with Washburn taking on Hancock County at 6 p.m. and Cosby taking on Jellico at 7:30 p.m.

The winners will play for a district title at Washburn on Monday at 7:30 p.m.
