NWS: Chance of winter weather this weekend

After a rainy winter so far, the Lakeway Area might receive some snow showers this weekend.

A storm system is expected to impact portions of the southeastern U.S. on Saturday evening into Sunday.

Over the past 24 hours, trends have been towards a storm track that is more favorable for accumulating snowfall in the East Tennessee-Southwest Virginia area.

According to the National Weather Service in Morristown, confidence remains low on exactly how much snow might fall, and what the impacts will be.

Trends could become more or less favorable for snow.

“We have a wind advisory in effect until 4 p.m., Thursday,” Meteorologist Sam Roberts of the National Weather Service in Morristown said. “Over the past few days, the system that we’ve been watching has changed. As little as three days it really didn’t look like anything. It has been trending upward over the last few days.”

Roberts said that the system is very favorable to higher snow amounts in the mountains.

“We can see anywhere from three to five inches on the highest peaks,” Roberts said. “The National Weather Service at the Tri-Cities Airport is forecasting only ½ inch of snow, but up to Roan Mountain and areas above 4,000 feet, the current outlook is three to five inches.

Roberts advised those traveling to stay tuned to updates on the forecast.
