A 62-year-old Morris-town man was found dead after his apartment caught fire Tuesday morning on Tulip Lane.

According to information from the Morristown Fire Department, a neighbor smelled smoke and was awakened by smoke alarms going off. The neighbor pounded on the front door of the apartment, but there was no response. The neighbor then called 911 who dispatched MFD crews to the apartment site.

The 911 call came in at 7:30 a.m. with 20 personnel, four engines, a truck and a battalion chief arriving within five minutes. Due to the death, Morristown Police Department, Morristown-Hamblen EMS and the Hamblen County Coroner were all called to the scene.

Upon arrival, crews saw light smoke through the eaves of the apartment building. Crews had to breech both the storm and front doors due to both being locked. Upon access, there was heavy smoke and fire in the living room area. A 62-year-old man was found in the living room deceased.

The man’s identity has not been released, pending notification of relatives.

After the fire was extinguished, fans were placed throughout the building to dissipate the smoke. An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing at this time.
