Lady ‘Canes roll past Sevier County 15-0

Morristown East’s softball team jumped out to a quick lead and put things away early Tuesday afternoon at King Park.

The Lady Hurricanes scored nine runs in the first inning, and six runs in the third inning to roll past the Bearettes 15-0.

East’s three seniors had key roles in the victory.

Senior Kylie Rader kept the Bearettes at bay, no-hitting the visitors in the three-inning contest. Rader only allowed two second inning walks which didn’t amount to any offense. She had eight strikeouts in the contest.

Offensively, senior Keely Shisler drove in two runs, two hits, a stolen base and scored two runs. Ella Wampler had a two-run single in the first inning and a walk.

In the third, Jaycee Hamilton cracked a three-run homer to put the Lady Canes atop 15-0 and end the game via slaughter rule.

According to Lady Hurricane Coach Sydney Davis, the win was much needed.

“The race in the second half, I believe will come down to us and West,” Davis said. “We’ll be the top two teams. We’ve already beat Jefferson County once. I think West has done the same as well. We’re pretty neck-and-neck at this point. There’s always some back and forth with West each year. Hopefully, when we play them here, it will be a different story.”

The game was disrupted for about 10 minutes in the top of the second inning when an elderly fan cursed both teams and the home plate umpire ordered him to leave. The man was reluctant to vacate the premises, but an East game official was able to get the man to leave.

Junior pitcher Hannah Cline took the loss for the Bearettes.

With the win, the Lady Hurricanes improve to 4-10-1, but have a 2-1 record in the Intermountain Athletic Conference. East’s lone conference loss came to West. East plays at Jefferson County in an IMAC matchup Thursday.
