Aviah Bunsic and Briony Bunsic have been on fire at the top of the lineup for Morristown West, and that continued on Thursday night.
Taking on Sevier County, both Aviah and Briony smacked home runs as the Lady Trojans collected 13 hits in a 13-0 win in four innings.
The win moved West to 4-0 in district play.
Aviah Bunsic’s home run came in the bottom of the first and was a two-run shot. Meanwhile, Briony Bunsic hit a solo shot in the second inning to make it 6-0. She also had a triple and single and threw all four innings in the circle, striking out six while allowing just two hits.
“Briony and Aviah continue to hit the ball really well for us at the top of the lineup,” Morristown West coach Heather Kelley said. “Briony switched to the left side of the plate after hitting right for her entire life. That was her second home run this year. And Aviah is continuing to hit the ball, as well. She had a really nice swing on the home run.”
While Aviah and Briony led the way at the plate, it was a complete effort from the entire West lineup. Kaylee Dyke picked up two hits and drove in three runs while Aubrie Messer and Arlette Gutierrez each drove in two runs, Messer’s on a single and Gutierrez’s on a double that ended the game early. Cadence Beaver also had two hits in the game and drove in two runs.
“I thought Kaylee Dyke did a really nice job at the plate for us today,” Kelley said. “She came up with two big hits. Really, everyone did a nice job at the plate today. Really proud of our effort.”
The scoring started early and often for West as Briony Bunsic led off the bottom of the first with a triple and Aviah Bunsic smacked her two-run homer to make it 2-0. The Lady Trojans added three more runs in the inning as Dyke singled home two runs and Beaver hit an RBI single.
Following a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the second, West batted around for the second straight inning. Briony led off the inning with a solo homer before Jaelyn McDaniel walked and Mikaela Olodey singled. That brought up Messer who singled in both runners to make it 8-0. One batter later, it was 9-0 as Dyke doubled home Messer.
West would score two more runs in the inning as Beaver and Briony Bunsic each had RBI singles that made it 11-0.
Following a scoreless third inning, the Lady Trojans ended things early in the bottom of the fourth. Hailey Milton led things off with a single before Beaver walked to put two on. That brought up Gutierrez for her first at-bat of the game. Gutierrez made the most of it with a two-RBI double.
Morristown West will be back in action on Monday as they host South Doyle at 5 p.m. The Lady Trojans will then head off next weekend to a tournament at Gibbs.
“We’re playing well right now, but there’s always room for improvement,” Kelley said. “We just want to take this and keep going. We’ve got a big tournament next weekend, so we want to keep the momentum going.”
