First barn in Hamblen County part of UT Mural Campaign

When a marketing idea works, run with it.
In the vein of the old “See Rock City” advertising campaign, you can see the “Everywhere You Look, UT” barns at 35 sites across Tennessee.
One of those sites is at Shannon Greene’s barn on West Andrew Johnson Highway traveling east towards Morristown on U.S. Highway 11E in Talbott. Greene’s barn has 25,000 to 30,000 vehicles pass by the 54-foot mural daily.
“It looks good,” Greene said. “It’s the first barn coming into Hamblen County.”
The “Everywhere You Look, UT” mural campaign recently added Greene’s barn to its growing list of locations.
“I clearly have a preference and it’s Tennessee,” Greene said. “I’ve been all over the world, but I’m always going to call this state home. I hope this mural encourages the same for our young people.”
UT has a goal to paint one mural in each of Tennessee’s 95 counties by 2030. Currently, it has murals on barns in 37 counties. Lakeway Area locations include Grainger at Red Barn Produce on U.S. 11W in Rutledge, Greene at Douthat Farms in Mohawk and Hamblen, at the Greene Farm.
Greene, who studied horticulture at UT but ended his education a semester early to start life as a newlywed, owns and operates ABG Caulking and Waterproofing of Morristown, Inc. While his work has taken him to universities across the southeast, he says those visits have only reinforced his appreciation for UT.
“I support the program, athletics and education,” Greene said. “My lesson is don’t take off from college because you’ll never go back, but I’ve turned out okay.”
Greene is a 1974 graduate of Morristown-Hamblen High School West, attended Walters State Community College and then went on to UT.
Greene hopes that the 54-foot-wide mural painted on the side of his barn showcases to Hamblen County students that they don’t need to leave the state to have a great educational experience.
