A Newport man who went- into a neighbor’s garden and fired a gun into the air was charged in the incident Monday.

Garrett Dustin Cameron, 33, was charged with reckless endangerment involving a deadly weapon.

According to a report from the Cocke County Sheriff’s Office, K-9 Deputy Jacob Damron was called to the 1200 block of Brady Road in Newport where David Stokley said that another man, identified as Cameron, allegedly pulled a gun on him while in the garden. Stokley told deputies that he was working in his garden when he was allegedly approached by Cameron, who shot the gun into the air and was talking “out of his head.”

Stokley said that he last saw Cameron on the back porch of his home and thought that Cameron went into Stokley’s home.

Deputies proceeded to set a perimeter around the residence and gave commands on a speaker for Cameron to show his hands.

Cameron shook his head no and shut the door going back into the residence. Deputies gave several commands for Cameron to exit the residence with his hands up and unarmed, but he refused.

When Cameron returned to the front door for the second time, he shut the door again, ignoring commands to surrender. During this time, the Cocke County SWAT team was activated and after a short time being on scene, Cameron came out the back door of the residence walking through the yard along the tree line. After refusing SWAT commands to get on the ground, deputies escorted Cameron to the ground. While he was being subdued, Cameron kept his right hand under his stomach and resisted arrest by pulling and tensing up, the report said.

Once deputies were able to get handcuffs on Cameron, a pat-down search resulted in recovery of a .40 caliber handgun with 12 live rounds inside and 36 rounds inside an ammunition box in his hoodie. Captain Bob Schaff and Dep. Randy Forbes located a spent shell casing in the yard while Deputy Dylan Norton located a live round 14 feet from where the first casing was discovered. Cameron was taken to Cocke County Jail.
