Girls Inc. debuts new Makerspace
F
Girls Inc. of Hamblen County is excited to offer a new program for girls ages 7-14 in the Lakeway Area.
The Girls Inc. Makerspace will be a space that offers active, creative and collaborative experiences. Girls will learn to create fun and exciting projects using STEM and the creative arts while using technology such as 3D printers, Cricut machines, and mechanical tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, wrenches and drills.
A grant from Howmet Aerospace Foundation has allowed the club to completely renovate one of the classrooms into a functional makerspace.
Any Lakeway Area girl between the ages 7-14 has the opportunity to participate in one of Girls Inc.’s 5-day camps this summer for only $15 to help cover supplies. In Makerspace Camp, girls will make their own T-shirt using the cricut cutting machine, will use the 3D printer to design and create a keychain, small knick-knack, or other three-dimensional object. Girls will also get hands-on experiences with hammers, drills, and screwdrivers to make things like wooden ukuleles.
A ribbon-cutting for the Makerspace will be held Tuesday, May 16 at 4:15 p.m.
Interested parents can sign their girls up for either morning or afternoon sessions at www.girlsinchamblencounty.org
Girls Inc. has been empowering girls ages 7-18 with educational and recreational programs in the Morristown area for more than 50 years.
