Sheila Marie Carton
Sheila Marie Carton passed from this world on May 4, 2023, at Serenity House in Morristown, Tennessee. Born on May 24, 1947, in Fort Wayne, Indiana, Sheila graduated from Morristown High School in 1965, and spent most of her life in Hamblen County. She was remarkably well-read and able to converse with great intelligence on subjects ranging from physics to theology to art history and music. She was predeceased by her parents, John and Veronica Carton, and her brother John. Sheila earned her daily bread for many years as a groomer at Moyer’s Veterinary Clinic, but also had been the organist at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Church before joining All Saints’ Episcopal Church where she became a pillar of the choir.
In addition to reading on every subject, Sheila loved opera and other forms of classical music. She also served as a lay reader of Holy Scripture for All Saints’, much appreciated for her vocal quality and interpretation of the texts. She made herself available for healing prayers each Sunday during the Holy Communion service. She sang alto in the choir.
Sheila’s quick wit and dry sense of humor was attractive. Her love of anything chocolate, daylilies, outlandish hats, and dinner parties was comparable to her love of her cats, Nancy, Gordo, and Gordita! Loved by everyone, she will be dearly missed.
A memorial service will be held at All Saint’s Episcopal Church on her birthday, May 24th at 4pm, and in keeping with Sheila’s love for UT she requested everyone wear orange and white to her service. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall.
