The Butch Grooms Memorial Cruise In returns June 3 to the Walters State Community College.
The car show created to memorialize Butch Grooms who died in July 2015, will welcome several antique car enthusiasts from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
“I started it in 2018 as a way to honor Butch,” Lisa Grooms, wife of the late Butch Grooms and Board Member of Stepping Out Inc. said. “Butch was always into cars, he restored a 1964 Chevrolet he named ‘June Bug.’”
“After he passed away I wanted to do this in memory of him, as a way to keep those memories of him alive,” Grooms said.
At the car show there will be a variety of antique cars on display, a silent auction, vendors and food trucks.
Morristown’s First Fire Truck will also make an appearance.
“We will have a lot of fun,” Grooms said. “There will be some cool old cars, food trucks and the First Fire Truck. It’s definitely an event you won’t want to miss.”
There will also be awards presented to the Top 15, Best of Show Chevy, Best of Show Ford, Best Jeep, Best Mini Truck, Best Rat Rod, Best Motorcycle and Stepping Out Inc. Choice.
Each year the drive-in donates money to a local nonprofit to share Butch Grooms’ giving nature. This year the donation will go to Stepping Out Inc.
“We always take up money to give to a non-profit to spread the same kindness he gave to others,” she said. “He was such a giving person, he would give his time to help out anyone who needed it.”
“This year we are donating to Stepping Out Inc.” she said. “Stepping Out has a very special place in my heart because it gave me my life back.”
We are a faith-based organization which works to create a pattern of positive behavior in individuals and families by equipping them with skills to achieve emotional, physical, and spiritual growth.
Lisa Grooms explained the importance of Stepping Out and how it has impacted her.
“Stepping helps so many people get back on their feet and get their lives together and we want to help continue to do that amazing work.”
“They teach a lot of life skills,” she said “They offer anger management courses, teach you how to clean your house, manage your checkbook and just so many skills that they don’t teach you in school.”
The organization fulfills its mission by teaching people the skills people need to change their thinking and behavior in three categories of life: emotional intelligence, practical and physical thriving and spiritual maturity and wholeness.
Lisa Grooms participated in the Automatic Positive Thinking class and she explained how it bettered her life.
“I took the Automatic Positive Thinking class in 2017 and it basically gave me my life back,” she said. “I had a lot of built up anger consume me and it broke me to the point where it was affecting everything in my life.”
She encourages everyone in the community to come out and enjoy the cruise-in and support Stepping Out Inc.
“We hope everyone comes out to see some awesome and interesting cars and also to support Stepping Out and their mission.”
