Morristown opens District Four 11-12 Softball Tournament with win over Greeneville

It was a late night at King Park on Thursday but that didn’t seem to bother the Morristown 11-12 All-Star softball team, easily dispatching Greeneville 13-2 in five innings in the District Four Tournament.
With the win, Morristown moves on to the Championship on Friday at 7:30 p.m. Morristown will take on the winner of Smoky Mountain and Greeneville, who play at 6 p.m.
Ashley Blackburn led the way in the circle for Morristown, throwing all five innings. Blackburn allowed two runs on four hits but struck out 10.
Morristown, the visiting team in the game, got things going early with two runs in the top of the first. Ally Mullins started the inning off with a one-out single before Blackburn and Abby Wright walked to load the bases. That brought up Laken Phillips, who singled home two runs to give Morristown the early advantage.
In the bottom of the first, Greeneville immediately got a run back as the first batter hit an inside-the-park home run. However, Blackburn bounced back by striking out the next three batters.
The top of the second was more of the same for Morristown as they scored two more runs to up their lead to 4-1. Harley Miller scored the first run of the inning as she was hit by a pitch and then made her way around the bases on some errant throws, eventually crossing the plate. The second run came as Maggie Laster doubled and then scored on a wild pitch.
In the top of the third, Morristown added three more runs as Mullins scored on a throw into the dugout, Blackburn scored on a passed ball and Phillips scored on a wild pitch. Blackburn picked up two more strikeouts in the bottom of the third before Morristown scored two more runs in the fourth as two passed balls scored Miller and Laster to make it 9-1.
Greeneville picked up their final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth, but Morristown scored four times in the top of the fifth. Those runs came on an RBI groundout by Madi Rich, a passed ball that scored Blackburn, a wild pitch that scored Phillips and a bases loaded walk to Ava Wolfe that made it 13-2.
In the bottom of the fifth, Blackburn got two strikeouts and a groundout to first to end the game an inning early.
