Phil obtained his BS in Industrial Technology at East TN State University in 1973.
Immediately after college, he was hired by American Enka/BASF and remained there until the plant in which he worked closed in 1994.
He worked a short time at both Howmet and BOS, then worked full time at Universal Furniture for several years.
When his time at Universal ended, he took care of his mother and happily took on the duties as a house husband.
Phil and Linda met at American Enka early in their employment and married in 1976.
He soon became active in the Morristown Jaycees, serving in numerous offices and later as president for most of two years.
He was a tireless volunteer in all of the Jaycee projects especially Haunted House and Christmas Tree Sales.
He collected numerous awards during the time he was a Jaycee.
Phil was a very active member of the Board of Directors of Girls Inc of Hamblen Co.
He took a major role in working with the contractor to build a back yard pavilion (which is dedicated to both Raines) and helped chair the Taste of Morristown for several years.
He served as Treasurer, chaired numerous committees including finance and maintenance and was the guy to call when a take charge person was needed.
Accolades from Girls Inc included the Della Jeffers Medlin “Special Friend” and the Volunteer of the Year, both of which he was awarded several times.
Phil ‘s favorite activity was riding his motorcycle with friends Rick and Dean.
They often took day trips to ride challenging roads in surrounding states and all parts of East Tennessee.
Phil loved the adrenaline rush that came from riding fast and hard with the wind in his face.
A trip to the European Alps with these same buddies in 2021 resulted in new friendships and the desire to participate in the 2nd Alps ride (Part 2 of 3) in 2022 which he did.
He was planning to attend the Part 3 Alps ride in August this year and had already paid for the trip.
Phil had an adventurous spirit.
He and Linda loved to travel and were lucky enough to visit places all over the world.
He loved telling people about their favorite trip – Africa – where adventure was only an arm’s length away on each of their safari outings.
Covid brought their travel to a stop so they were trying to do some catch up and had, in fact, already planned their Spring 2024 trip.
He was a loving and wonderful husband, son, brother and friend.
We will miss his smarty comments; his generosity and willingness to help others and his ability have fun wherever he was.
He was Linda’s best friend and partner in life.
There is a Celebration of Life Reception planned for Saturday, July 29, from 2pm to 5pm at the First Presbyterian Church Fellowship Hall in Morristown.
There will be no service. Please no Flowers.
For those wishing to give a donation in Phil’s memory, please do so to Noah’s Arc.
