Samuel Doak Chapter hosts July 4th Liberty Bell event
F
Twenty-seven people gathered at the Morristown City Center to celebrate our 247th year of Independence from Great Britian.
The Samuel Doak Chapter of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution lead the program with Chaplain Linda Triplett offering a prayer for our country and those who protect it.
Samuel Doak Chapter Second Vice Regent Joyce Damon and member Tracy Wood talked about July 2nd vs July 4th.
David Rutherford, former Sons of the Revolution (SOR) National Vice President, talked about the history of our Independence from England.
The men who signed the Declaration of Independence willingly gave up everything they had by signing that piece of paper on July 2nd.
But there were only two men who signed the final draft of the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, John Adams and the President of the Continental Congress John Hancock, and both were from Massachusetts.
Morristown City Mayor Gary Chesney welcomed everyone to the City Center, and talked about what July 4th meant to him, dating back to when his father served this country as a carrier-based pilot of the Navy, and when Mayor Chesney was an eight-year-old boy.
The program ended with the DAR members ringing the Replica Liberty Bell 13 times, one time for each of the 13 colonies. The children attending the program also rang the Replica Liberty Bell along with David Rutherford.
