Former Grainger baseball standout Trey Cabbage promoted to MLB, Los Angeles Angels

Earlier this week, Trey Cabbage received the news every baseball player dreams about.

He was going to the Majors.

A former Grainger standout, Cabbage was officially promoted on Friday, a member of the Los Angeles Angels at last.

It’s been a long time coming for Cabbage, drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the fourth round in 2015. Cabbage spent six years in the Twins Minor League System, his final year coming in 2021. During that season, the final year on his rookie contract, Cabbage had his coming out party with 27 homers and 82 RBIs.

Cabbage took that year and used it to sign with the Los Angeles Angels in 2022. Cabbage began the year in Double-AA, with the Rocket City Trash Pandas. Cabbage hit .327 with 10 homers and 32 RBIs in 30 games before breaking his wrist, ending his season prematurely.

Not discouraged, Cabbage continued to work during rehab and the offseason. Cabbage’s early season success in 2022 got him invited to Major League Spring Training this year. Cabbage stayed with the Angels all the way to the end of camp, hitting .258 with one homer and five runs driven in.

At the end of camp, Cabbage was assigned to Triple-AAA Salt Lake City where he has dominated throughout the first half of the season. In 81 games, Cabbage is hitting.287 with 23 home runs, 64 RBIs and 24 stolen bases. Cabbage is just one of three players in all levels of professional baseball to have 20 homers and 20 stolen bases at the All-Star break.

During the All-Star break, Cabbage received the call that he would be moving up with the Angels. The opportunity comes after Mike Trout and Jo Adell both went on the injured list.

Cabbage’s news is the second big moment for Grainger and the baseball community this week as Brady Smith was selected in the Third Round of the MLB Draft on Monday by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Cabbage graduated from Grainger in 2015.
