Carson-Newman to hold active shooter simulation

Carson-Newman University will simulate an active shooter scenario on July 27 in an effort to prepare students, faculty, and responding agencies to include the media, law enforcement and emergency medical services in the event of an active shooter on campus.

The event will take place from 8 a.m. – noon and involve participation from Tennessee Highway Patrol, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency, Jefferson County EMS, Carson-Newman Department of Public Safety, and other local law enforcement agencies.

Brogan access area on Norris Lake to be temporarily closed for improvements

The Judge Willard J. Brogan Access Area on Norris Lake will be temporarily closed for improvements from July 17 through August 30, 2023.

Engineering will be handled by Hatfield & Associates with Glass Machinery handling grading, paving, and striping the new parking area for an additional 36 vehicle/boat trailer parking spaces and 20 vehicle/jet ski spaces.

During this first phase, the ramp will be closed to the public to ensure public safety and integrity of the project while aggregate base and new pavement are being installed.

A 50-day window has been allotted for the improvements however crews are hopeful the project will be completed ahead of schedule. During the second phase, an additional 30’ wide ramp will be built amid the upcoming winter pool.

The access area property is owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority and licensed to TWRA and Claiborne County for development and access to Norris Lake. Project funding was made available through a $316,761.23 grant provided by the Appalachian Regional Commission, TWRA,

Claiborne County Government, and Powell Valley Electrical Cooperative.

Four children injured in Tellico Lake Boating crash

TWRA officers are investigating a Tellico Lake boating accident involving four children on an inner tube that were struck by another boat on Wednesday afternoon.

The incident occurred around 1:00 p.m. near Wind River Marina where four children onboard an inner tube being pulled behind a boat were struck by another boat. Three of the children have been taken to the University of Tennessee Medical Center with serious injuries.
