Welcome to the new school year Hurricanes
The storm surge of the 2023-2024 school year has hit as students flood back into the halls of east high.
The beginning of classes introduce new ranks of staff and students all ready to conquer the new year.
Along with a large freshman class, 31 new teachers and other staff members have joined the Mo East Family, including a new yearbook supervisor and vice principal.
In other news, clubs and extracurricular activities have their sights set on starting again as we bridge into the second week of school. Registration and officer elections are starting to take place, meaning new leaders and culture contributors have begun to emerge.
But even with all the change, some things will always remain the same.
The buzz is the beginning of the fall sports season– as the football, volleyball, golf, soccer, dance and cheerleading teams continue practicing.
On Friday, the football team will travel to TN high in their continued scrimmage schedule.
Plus, with August 18th as the set date for the Citizen Tribune Kickoff Classic, tensions are already spiking in anticipation for the big game. Themes for spirit week have just been announced through the Canes Crew: Monday is Rhyme without reason– dress up like two rhyming words with a partner, Tuesday is Generations Day– Freshman will dress as infants, Sophomores are middle schoolers, Juniors are college kids, Seniors are senior citizens, and teachers are teenagers, Wednesday is Barbenheimer day– dress up representing your pick of either the movie Barbie or Oppenheimer, Thursday is dress like a principal day (which speaks for itself!), and friday is jailbreak– the theme of the East-West student section.
Last week, all fall sports partook in media day, readying for fresh pictures to grace the gym walls.
Additionally, the golf team’s tournament at the Country club on the 30th and 31st of August proved successful for both the women’s and men’s teams– with the boys placing 7th of 23 teams and the girls, Sydney Courtney and McKinlee Hamilton each playing great games as well.
Friday morning, senior sunrise drew many upperclassmen out in the early morning to gather on Burke-Toney for time spent with their fellow classmates.
Although the cloud cover was denser than normal, the event proved to be wonderful still. Following the senior theme, Senior parking spots have gone on sale for $50 apiece.
The painting date is August 12th with a rain date of the 19th.
The tradition continues as the 61 senior parking spots will get a fresh coat of paint and the lot will be graced with the students and parents eager to leave their mark on the campus.
Although summer has come to an end, students are looking forward to the school year to come.
Being back in the social scene is reinvigorating for many as most students confess that their favorite part of the first week is being reunited with their friends.
Everyone at East is looking to the weeks to come, and they find all of us hoping that this will be the best year yet.
