Kansas officer critically wounded in shootout that killed Tennessee man, police say

MISSION, Kan. (AP) — A car chase through two Kansas City suburbs that ended in a shootout at a convenience store this weekend has killed a Tennessee man and left an officer from Fairway critically wounded, authorities said.

Lenexa police released the additional details late Sunday, identifying the man as Shannon Wayne Marshall, 40, from the town of Ashland City near Nashville.

He was shot and killed Sunday morning at a QuikTrip store in Mission, Kansas, after leading police on a chase along Interstate 35 in what officers believed was a stolen car. When officers initially found the vehicle around 7:30 a.m., police said the driver struck a patrol car and fled.

The wounded Fairway police officer was in critical condition as of Sunday night. The officer wasn’t immediately identified. Police from multiple agencies had been trying to arrest the suspects when gunfire broke out.

“Upon hearing the call for assistance, our officer courageously and without hesitation responded to help,” Fairway Chief of Police J.P. Thurlo said in a statement Sunday evening. “These brave actions are reflective of the men and women in law enforcement in our community, and throughout this country, who put on the badge knowing the potential dangers they may face in the course of their duties.”

A 32-year-old female passenger in the vehicle from Goodlettsville, Tennessee, was arrested on suspicion of aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer. The Associated Press does not generally name suspects until they are charged.

Senior Center to bring back Charity Bingo event

After a successful debt in 2022, the Senior Citizens Center in Morristown is bringing back its Charity Bingo Fundraiser in a big way.

Moving the venue from the center itself to the West Hamblen Volunteer Fire Department will more than triple the number of potential players. The event will be held on Friday, Aug. 11.

Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., the Bingo action starts at 6 p.m. The play is available to anyone in the community who is 18 or over. The cost is $30 for a book of 20 cards. Since there are three cards per game and 20 games available, the chances of winning a cash prize are ‘pretty, pretty good,’ as comedian Larry David would say.

Books will be available for purchase at the door.

For those who get a bit hungry while competing, the Big Al’s Bent Creek BBQ food truck will be on hand.

Parks and Rec to host Summer ‘Blues’ with Blue Mountain Saints

Morristown Parks and Recreation’s “Summer Jam Series,” a city sponsored event, will be held at Fulton Hill Park from 7-9 p.m. on August 25th.

The band “Blue Mountain Saints” will perform on the Great Lawn with parking available nearby.

The parks and rec department encourages attendees to grab a bite or treat from the Floyd’s Snack Shack, P5 Sweets, or Snowie of Lakeway.

Blue Mountain Saints came together in 2018 when Mark Mervis met Donard Doyle at a Christmas toy benefit in Bristol, TN and a musical bond was formed. Realizing their musical tastes and styles meshed perfectly, Mark and Don began playing duo shows shortly thereafter.

After relocating to Bristol in 2018, Jim Madigan joined with Don and Mark to form the first Blue Mountain Saints.

The band considers themselves a Rhythm and Blues band with influences from Ray Charles to Steely Dan.

In mid-2019 Joe Hoskins joined the Saints and quickly rounded out the line up with a rock and soul background.

Blue Mountain Saints performed originals and multi-genre covers to rave reviews through 2022.

In early 2023, co-founder Donard Doyle was gone in the blink of an eye to a sudden heart attack. Knowing that Don would want the Saints to continue, Dave Bachman came on board with the guitar to complete this eclectic group with Mervis on bass/guitar/vocals, Hoskins on Guitar/vocals, and Madigan on all percussion.
