David Crockett handed Morristown East a 3-1 volleyball setback Monday evening at Isenburg-Siler Gym.

The Lady Pioneers squeaked out a 26-24 win in the opening set before the Lady Hurricanes rolled to a 25-14 triumph to even the match.

Crockett then won the third set by 25-22 and closed out the match with a 25-17 win.

Sophia Gouge led the Lady Pioneers as she put down 11 kills, served five aces and blocked a shot. Kamryn Martin added eight kills and three blocked for the winners while Brylee Tullock had four kills and two aces and Callie Butler also had four kills.

Hannah Hall racked up eight kills, served two aces and blocked two shots for the Lady Hurricanes who are now 3-2 for the season.

Riley Forester added six kills while Reagan Forester and Harmony Sullivan had five apiece. Hailey Hall served three aces and Emma Swint added two.

First-year East coach Courtney Dotson said, “I think our lack of practice time right now is really showing up. There’s a lot of little things I think we could eliminate but we’re not really getting time to practice.”

Dotson added, “You know we’re still a young team and we’re still trying to figure out what works for us.

“Crockett’s a good team and played well tonight,” said the coach.

“We struggled receiving serve tonight more than usual and I don’t know what caused that.

We just really need time to practice and see if we can get these things corrected.

The first set was close all the way. There were 10 ties and five lead changes.

East was on top 16-13 after a 5-1 scoring run. However, the visitors reeled off a 6-1 run and grabbed a two-point lead.

A kill by Reagan Forester and a missed kill by the Lady Pioneers allowed East to tie the match at 23-23. Tullock nailed a kill for Crockett and then hit a kill into the net and it was 24-24.

But East had a kill attempt sail out of bounds and Lacy Bowles served an ace to end the set.

The Lady ‘Canes were down 4-2 in game two when they went on a 10-2 run highlighted by a couple of aces by Swint and kills by Sullivan and Hailey Hall.

Crockett scored two points in a row before serving out of bounds. Hailey Hall then served eight straight points including a pair of aces and East was in total control at 21-8 and posted the easy win.

The third set saw the Lady Hurricanes grab an early 4-2 lead on a kill by Riley Forester. However, the Lady Pioneers went on a 10-2 run and East never really recovered although the Lady ‘Canes chopped it all the way down to one at 23-22 as Riley Forester had two more kills in a three-point run.

But Gouge pushed a shot into an open spot and Sophie Greear smacked a kill to end the set.

East led the fourth set 2-0 when Gouge knocked down a kill and then served 10 straight points that included three aces.

The Lady Hurricanes tried to battle back but never got closer than six points the rest of the match.
