A recycling plant in Newport caught fire Monday evening, setting flame to a massive amount of plastic materials, according to local officials.

Scott Recycling, located at 131 Verner Avenue in Newport, was destroyed in the blaze.

Shortly after 9 p.m. Monday, dispatch received multiple reports of the facility on fire.

Multiple agencies – via mutual aid agreements – responded to offer aid as firefighters battled the flame.

While Newport Mayor Rob Mathis confirmed the fire was under control by 9 a.m., officials indicated that due to the plastic materials involved, hot spots were still being monitored.

Authorities indicate no one was injured. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
