Lorene Atchley Chance, age 79, of Talbott TN, formerly of Morristown and Sevierville, passed away peacefully after a brief and brave battle with cancer on August 22, 2023.

A devoted teacher for 44 years, she taught first in Pigeon Forge and later, for 33 years, in Hamblen County at East Ridge Middle School.

In the years since her retirement, she loved traveling; spending time with friends and family; playing Scrabble, Words With Friends, and hymns on her piano; and lavishing attention on her beloved dogs, Mitzi and Joey.

She was preceded in death by her husband and childhood friend, Charles K. Chance; parents, James R. (Jim Bob) Atchley and Lucile Connatser Atchley; brother, Ronald Atchley; infant brother, James Roy; uncles, Olus, Gray and Audley; aunt, Lillian Lane; and nephew, Robert C. Atchley.

She is survived by her children, Dr. Brian A. Chance and Lindsay Chance, Eds; daughter-in-law Dr. Jennifer Saltzstein; son-in-law Ni Ute Crowe; nephews SMS James Atchley and Ronald C. Atchley Jr.; cousins, Marion and Etheleen; and grandson Remi, who lovingly referred to her as Tennessee Grandma.

She loved and was loved profoundly and deeply by those who knew her, and she will be greatly missed.

The family will receive friends 5-7 PM Friday, August 25, 2023, at Atchley Funeral Home, Sevierville.

A funeral service will be held 11 AM Saturday at Eden Methodist Church, Sevierville. Interment will follow the service in Eden Cemetery.
