WHITE PINE—Unbeaten Lakeway Christian Academy racked up its sixth volleyball victory of the season Monday night by rolling past Knoxville Trailblazers in straight sets.
The Lady Lions posted a 25-13 triumph in the opening set and won the final two sets by identical 25-18 margins.
Sophomore Darby Felts, daughter of Coach Cory Felts, led the attack with 16 kills and also blocked three shots and served an ace.
Codi Sparks added five kills for the Lady Lions while Madison Mulvene chipped in four. Addison Adair racked up four blocks while Ellie Linx served six aces and GraceLynn Decker and Mulvene had two apiece.
The Trailblazers, who are a home schooled team, were led by Rachel Wagner with six kills and two aces. The losers are now 11-6 for the season.
Coach Felts was pleased with the play of his team, “I thought we had a pretty good match. We did a good job on defense and I thought we hit the ball pretty well most of the night.
“Darby had another good match. She continued to work hard to improve and has added some tools to work with,” said the coach.
Felts said, “I’ve done my best to beef up our schedule and I think it has been stronger early. It’s hard to get teams to play especially at home but that’s what I’ve been working on. We didn’t play a lot of really good teams last year and it hurt us when we got to the state tournament.
“I felt Addi and Madison both had good matches tonight and Ellie did a good job serving the ball and I felt GraceLynn did a good job.”
Decker was playing in place of the injured Ariel Bloomquist. “She stepped in and did a really nice job. She’s a good player but just doesn’t have that much playing time. We’ve got several girls like that who are very capable of stepping in and getting the job done.”
The first set was close in the early stages with the Trailblazers holding a 5-3 lead when the Lady Lions rolled off a 9-1 run to take control of the set.
Felts had a couple of kills, Mulvene served a pair of aces and Linx added another in the spurt.
The visitors rallied within 16-11 but Lakeway ended the set with a 9-2 run as Decker’s dink ended the set.
It was 4-4 in the second set when Linx served consecutive aces in a four-point run. The Lady Lions led by 12-8 when they reeled off five straight points. However, the Trailblazers had a 7-1 run of their own and closed the margin down to 19-16.
But Felts knocked down a kill and Linx served another ace and Lakeway won the set going away.
The Lady Lions trailed by 5-3 in the third set but scored four straight and never trailed again. The Trailblazers stayed close and were within 16-15 when Sparks and Decker had kills and Decker added an ace as the lead increased to 22-16.
Felts scored the final three points as she sandwiched kills around a blocked shot.
