Bloom! – Hamblen County Garden Club expands membership
B
The Hamblen County Garden Club will host its inaugural garden party and a plant sale to benefit the club and its mission.
The Hamblen County Garden Club is a community organization welcoming all levels of gardeners. The group provides a forum to educate, share knowledge and experience and encourage the love of gardening while fostering friendships.
The club promotes, protects and encourages environmental and conservation best practices while also providing community guidance for civic beautification and support students and other non-profits.
The gardening club which was founded earlier this year, has been busy recruiting members and spreading their love of plants throughout the community. N
It rewarded the members’ efforts by hosting a ‘Fancy Hats Garden Party.’
The party was held Thursday, August 24, allowing members to reflect on what the group has accomplished thus far.
The club holds monthly meetings at the Rose Center every fourth Thursday. Each month the club mingles with local gardeners and has guest speakers give gardening tips.
For one of its first meetings, Jason Rogers, manager of Grow Morristown, visited with the club to discuss his program and how it is designed to help families learn about sustainability through gardening.
In June, Vic Trobaugh of Advanced Landscaping Services in Morristown gave a presentation on Landscaping 101.
Trobaugh, an award winning and experienced landscaper who has been providing professional landscaping services to Hamblen County and the surrounding areas for over 30 years answered questions and offered advice to gardeners on how to make their garden look visually appealing.
All levels of gardeners are welcome to attend up to 3 consecutive meetings before being asked to join the group.
Those interested can join anytime for $25 or $20 for seniors/students. Memberships help the club support the garden club and keep the community beautiful.
The garden club has helped with several local organizations and entities including the Rose Center and the Morristown-Hamblen Library.
The club held its first project of the year by redoing the herb garden at Rose Center.
The Herb Garden was created several years ago by the Garden Thyme Herb Society and since its disbandment several other plants have since been replaced in the garden.
The garden club took on the responsibility of maintaining and cleaned out all the planters around the center and planted an Herbal Tea Garden.
The club helped the library with its Seed Swap. Club members were present to talk about their organization and donated dozens of seed packets.
The HCGC will host a plant and yard sale at 3505 Call St. in Morristown from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday September 2.
Members will sell a variety of species of plants which include: American Elderberry, Columbine, Wooly Lambs Ear, Columbine, Black Eyed Susan, Lavender (Hidcote variety), Shasta Daisy, Ajuga (Bugleweed), Coneflowers, Sedums, Hardy Begonia, Orchid Cactus (Cereus oxypetalum), Dragon Wing Begonia and Bunny Bellies tradescantia.
