Nita’s kitchen offers authentic Latin menu in Morristown

Nita Brown operates Nita’s Kitchen & Family where she has served home cooked authentic Latin foods since June.

Brown is no stranger to cooking, as she has helped her mom in the kitchen since she was little.

“I’ve been cooking since I could remember,” Brown said. “I was about 7 years old helping my mom in the kitchen cooking for our family of 8 until I was old enough to do it on my own.

Once she reached the age of 16, Brown moved on to the next chapter of her life when she studied the culinary arts.

“At 16 went to trade school for the culinary arts where I learned different ways and genres of foods to cook,” she said. “I graduated at the age of 17 but I was too young to work in kitchens.”

“That’s when I got into retail. However, I was always the cook of the family. I usually hosted Sunday family dinners.”

Brown is originally from New York and moved to Morristown in 2020. After living in the area for 3 years her family encouraged her to start Nita’s Kitchen & Family.

“My family wanted to open a family business for years and of course for me to be the cook of the establishment,” Brown said. “So one day I decided let’s do it. Started cooking in my kitchen. Hint why we are called Nita’s Kitchen and Family.”

The business is run by Brown’s husband Marcus, her son Josh, her mother in law Gladys and a variety of other family and friends who stop by and help by contributing their time.

It all started with Brown selling to friends, family and coworkers and then she got the idea to start a Facebook page to spread the word and also take orders.

Their menu is usually different each week with popular items making a return. Brown only cooks once a week, on Sunday, and announces that week’s menu on Tuesday. She takes orders throughout the week, but the list is usually full by the next day.

“We operate one day a week which it’s only Sundays for now. I work full time in retail so that really is the only time I have as well,” she said. “We advertise our menu for that Sunday on the Tuesday prior.

“Our menu is different every week but we do repeat some dishes that people really enjoy like our empanadas, our Spanish rice and our honey cornbread.”

Platters average $15 each week and can feed two people. Nita offers pickup and delivery for orders.

“We do have pickup and delivery available,” Brown said. “We mainly deliver to our customers in the Morristown area. We do charge a $3 delivery fee which seems to be the cheapest in town.”

Brown’s next goal with the business is to open a storefront in the area so she can serve more people her home made foods.

“Our goal is to eventually get a small location to feed the community our delicious food,” she said. “When will that happen? Well we do not know but we will continue to cook for the people right out of our kitchen.”

“We do have our heart set on something and we pray that we can continue to get support from our customers to reach that goal.”
