An 8-year-old girl was shot and killed Tuesday afternoon in Claiborne County.

The Claiborne County Sheriff’s Office reported that the shooting happened in the 6000 block of State Route 90 in the Clairfield community around 4 p.m. The Sheriff’s Office is believing the shooting to be accidental as the investigation continues.

The child was a student at Clairfield Elementary School. Counselors were on campus Wednesday for staff and affected students.
