Local 3rd grader debuts in New York Fashion Week 2026

While most nine-year-olds are stepping out onto a playground, Lydia Barnes is stepping out onto a New York City runway. On February 14, 2026 Lydia had the opportunity to walk in three different fashion shows for three different fashion designers: Marc Defang who specializes in pageant shoes; however, he is branching out to interview wear. Lydia modeled his spring collection of interview outfits. She also modeled for Charjean Couture and LaBella Vie High Fashion, both of which are upcoming high fashion designers.

But this is more than a runway, this is her story. Lydia has always loved high, heeled shoes. One time when she was two years old, she climbed up into a closet to find a pair of high heeled shoes and she’s never looked back since.

Lydia started doing pageants last spring, and we found the ability to walk and runway shows almost by accident. We thought we would give it a try. When the music started and the lights hit her face, something happened. She glowed. She truly found what she loved doing.

We are not sure if Lydia found the runway, or if the runway found her. One thing we know for sure is that it’s building character. It’s the courage to try something new, to take that first step, even when your heart is pounding, and to learn how to shine. She’s learning not only how walk the runway, but she’s learning how to walk through life. Boldly. Graceful. Unafraid.

When she’s not practicing her walk, Lydia stays busy with her three brothers at home, and she is in third grade at Alpha elementary school.

Fashion Week this year in New York City, a bi annual event, featured more than 60 runway shows drawing top designers, fashion editors, and buyers from around the world.
