Powerful History: Morristown Utilities celebrates 125th birthday

Morristown Utilities (MU) marked a major milestone on Friday, February 6th, celebrating 125 years of providing reliable utility services and supporting the growth and quality of life to the Morristown community.

The anniversary celebration honored the people, partnerships, and community commitment that have shaped MU’s legacy.

The city of Morristown entered the utility business in 1887 with the purchase of a local power system, followed by the launch of its first water system in 1897.

On February 6, 1901, the electric and water systems merged under a single charter, forming what is now known as Morristown Utilities.

What began with a few streetlights and water pumps quickly became the foundation for a growing city.

Throughout the 20th century, Morristown Utilities expanded alongside the community, supporting economic growth through the Great Depression, World War II, and the city’s industrial expansion. A partnership with the Tennessee Valley Authority in 1941 strengthened the delivery of reliable and affordable power, followed by continued investments in substations, transmission lines, and water infrastructure.

In 1962, the organization became the Morristown Utilities Commission.

Innovation has remained cen

tral to MU’s mission.

In 2006, MU launched FiberNET, becoming one of the first municipal utilities in Tennessee to offer Fiber Optic, high-speed internet, video, and voice services.

In 2014, MU assumed operation of the Wastewater System, uniting electric, water, wastewater, and telecommunications services under one organization.

Beyond infrastructure, Morristown Utilities has remained deeply committed to community service through customer assistance programs, local partnerships, and support for nonprofit organizations.

In its 125-year history, only seven general managers have led the utility, providing stability and long-term vision.

“For 125 years, Morristown Utilities has stood as a symbol of progress, service, and community pride. It has been my honor to lead an organization through a sustained period of advanced technology. MUC is blessed with an exceptional board, excellent staff, and skilled employees on all levels. Success in our mission is achieved through a team effort,” said Jody Wigington, retired General Manager. As Morristown Utilities looks to the future, the organization remains focused on reliability, sustainability, and service.

With ongoing investments in power, water, wastewater, and fiber infrastructure, MU continues to build on its legacy while preparing for generations to come.

“This milestone honors the people who built Morristown Utilities and the community that has supported us for 125 years,” said Interim General Manager Clark Rucker. “While we celebrate our history, we are focused on the future and delivering dependable services that support growth, innovation, and quality of life in Morristown.”
