For more than six decades, Citizen Tribune Sports Writer Derwin Helton has been a fixture on the sidelines, in the stands, and along the baselines of Morristown East athletic events.

On Wednesday, February 4, the community he has spent a lifetime documenting finally turned the spotlight on him.

In a ceremony filled with nostalgia and gratitude, Morristown East High School officially inducted Helton into the “Hurricane Hall of Fame,” honoring a man whose career has become synonymous with the history of local sports.

A 1966 graduate of Morristown High School, Helton’s journey into sports journalism began during his senior year with the 1965 football season.

This winter marks his 61st season covering local athletics, a staggering tenure that has seen him report on everything from football and basketball to track and golf.

While his work often took him to collegiate venues at Carson-Newman University and Walters State Community College, he never lost his focus on the local student-athletes who form the heart of the Morristown community.

Beyond the press box, Helton’s influence on local sports was felt through his 24-year career as the Athletic Coordinator for the City of Morristown.

His professional dedication earned him numerous accolades, including the prestigious A.F. Bridges First District Contributor of the Year Award from the Tennessee Secondary School Athletics Association.

Yet, Helton remains a man of simple priorities. During his induction, he noted that the true rewards of his career aren’t found in trophies, but in the moments when a parent thanks him for writing about their child or when a reader expresses enjoyment of his columns.

Helton’s contribution to Morristown East specifically is unparalleled.

Widely considered the local authority on high school sports history, he served as the official statistician for East football from 1990 until 2024 and maintained the records for the entirety of Coach Richard Price’s baseball career.

Even after a back injury limited his official duties, his presence remained constant.

His writing philosophy has always been “down to earth,” rooted in accuracy and a desire to mention as many kids as possible, understanding the quiet thrill a young athlete feels seeing their name in print.

The ceremony also served as a moment of reflection on the personal sacrifices required by a life in sports.

Helton expressed deep gratitude for his wife of 56 years, Evelyn, and his sons, David and Douglas, for supporting the countless nights he spent at the ballpark.

Now a proud grandfather to Riley and Desmond, Helton continues to cover high school basketball with the same passion he brought to the job in 1965.

By enshrining him in the Hall of Fame, Morristown East has ensured that the man who preserved the memories of generations of Hurricanes will now have his own legacy permanently etched in school history.
