James “Jim” Douglas Susong

James “Jim” Douglas Susong, 86, left Morristown on Saturday, March 7, 2026, headed to meet his Lucy Jane.

Born in 1939, Jim married Jane Hudgens in 1960 and together they built a life that would bring two children, Susan and Chris into the world. Jim was a skilled millwright who could fix anything that needed fixing. He was a poet and artist, who published his own children’s book and created fantastical creatures from spare parts. He loved his Lord, his Lucy Jane, and his family. Jim often doted on his four grandchildren, Parker and Payne Susong and Alexander and Connar Capps. Jim loved the outdoors and particularly loved the Nolichucky River, where he spent untold hours floating and fishing in his youth.

There wasn’t a cowboy he didn’t know on a first name basis. His fondness for all things Western was well known, he even rode a bull or two as a young man. Jim was always kind, and his dry wit and humor would lift spirits in hard times. He was a tireless caregiver during Jane’s health issues; he was devoted to her beyond compare. Like the cowboys of the Old West, Jim believed in hard work, loyalty, and doing right by others. His trail on this earth has come to an end, but a good man has ridden on ahead.

Jim is survived by his sister, Janie (Lewis) Robinson of Martinsville, IN; children, Chris (Alyson) Susong and Susan (Chris) Capps; grandchildren, Parker Susong, Payne Susong, Alexander Capps, and Connar (Nick) Greene; special friend, Larry Coker of Stillwater, OK; cousin, Randy Susong; as well as many other local cousins.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the staff at Terra Bella and Friends of Hospice Serenity House.

The family will receive friends from 5:30 – 7:30 PM, on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, in the East Chapel of Allen Funeral Home, with memorial readings at 7:30 PM. A private graveside service will be held at Dover Cumberland Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Arrangements by Allen Funeral Home.
