Native Dance: Dine Tah’ Navajo Dancers to perform at Spirit of Nations Powwow

The Dine Tah’ Navajo Dancers, who have appeared at the JFK Center for the Performing Arts and at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival, will be featured at the Spirit of Nations Powwow on Saturday, March 28, at Jefferson County High School in Dandridge.

The group, led by Director Shawn Price, has been sharing their traditional dances with audiences at home and abroad since 1993.

They have received numerous awards and honors during this time.

This outstanding group of young, talented and disciplined individuals offers a unique program of the finest in traditional and semi-contemporary performances.

The Dine Tah’ Navajo Dancers are performing ambassadors to the Great Navajo Nations. “Maintaining their deep connection to the religious aspects of their culture is of the utmost importance in their program,” said Price.

Dr. Mark Finchum, president of Indian Creek Productions, Inc., sponsor of the powwow, said, “We are honored to have the Dine Tah’ Navajo Dancers in Jefferson County. They have performed in so many unique venues and for some truly amazing audiences. Now they are coming here!”

Other activities at the powwow include demonstrations of bandolier bag construction, stone carving, wampum jewelry making, wood carving, beadwork, and finger weaving. Guests will also enjoy visiting a southeastern bark encampment, activities for the children, hoop dancing, American Indian arts and crafts for sale, flute music, Indian tacos, a silent auction, and competition powwow dancing.

Funding for the Spirit of Nations Powwow is provided in part by grants from the Tennessee Arts Commission, the Tennessee America 250 commission, the Jefferson County Department of Tourism, and numerous businesses and individuals.

Jefferson County High School is located at 115 West Dumplin Valley Road in Dandridge. Admission is $7 for adults and $2 for children. There is no charge for preschoolers. Veterans and active-duty military personnel are admitted free.

The powwow hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with the Grand Entry at noon. Performances by the Dine’ Tah Navajo Dancers are planned for approximately 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.
