Morristown East downs West Ridge in Region 1-4A Semifinal, secures spot in sectional

SEVIERVILLE — For the first time in school history, Morristown East’s girls will play in a Class 4A State Sectional game for the second straight season.

The Lady ‘Canes took down West Ridge in the Region 1-4A semifinal, 65-54.

East improved to 25-6 on the season and will play Sevier County in Wednesday’s region championship in a rematch of last year’s championship, which East took 49-40.

Hannah Hall paced the Lady ‘Canes with 18 points as her impressive postseason continues. Rounding out the scoring was Kennady Phillips with 15, Molli Stuffle 10 and Jaelyn Valentine eight.

Stuffle put in 7-of-8 free throws in the final frame and scored all 10 of her points in the second half.

East fell behind 9-2 early, but it used a 19-5 second quarter to take a 31-20 lead and rode the cushion to the end.

The winner of Wednesday’s contest will host the Region 2 runner up on Saturday, with the loser traveling to the Region 2 champion. 

Tip off on Wednesday is set for 7:00 p.m.
