Roundup: Carden’s 9 strikeouts lift Morristown East past Eagleton, 1-0

All Morristown East baseball needed was one run to pick up its second win of the season.

Pitcher Brett Carden delivered a gem on the mound, throwing a complete game while giving up just one run and striking out nine. He also walked just one batter in the process.Locked in a 0-0 tie for the first five innings, Landry Winstead hit a leadoff double in the top of the sixth and tagged up to advance to third base. Tucker Wyatt followed by bunting in Winstead. Carden went three up, three down in the second, fifth and sixth innings. In the seventh, Carden followed a one-out walk with back-to-back K’s to put the game on ice.

Inspiration Academy 7, Lakeway 2

Chase Gockenbach drove in two runs on two hits, but the Lions couldn’t overcome five runs from Inspiration Academy in the final two innings. Gockenbach singled in the bottom of the fifth to make it 2-1 Inspiration, and his other came on a double in the seventh.

Softball

Jefferson County 16, Sevier County 2

All nine Lady Patriots with an at-bat recorded an RBI in a run-rule win over Sevier County. Kayli Reece homered, McKaylee Hobby had four hits and Bella Watson had three hits and four RBI in the win. Jefferson County scored in all five innings and had 14 in the final three, including a six-run fourth inning.

Grainger 12, Cherokee 2

Shylo Williford led Grainger on both sides of the ball on Thursday in a 12-2 run-rule win over Cherokee. Williford had three hits and six RBI, homering twice in the process. On the mound, Williford pitched all six innings, striking out six. She started the Grizzlies’ scoring with a 2-1 blast in the bottom of the first, and she sparked the rout with a three-run shot in the fifth to make it 6-2. Jaylee Hayes followed WIlliford with a solo shot on the next AB. Williford hit an RBI single in the sixth, followed by a Hayes RBI double a score on an error to reach the run rule. Hayes and Destanee Davis also had three hits.

Science Hill 5, Lakeway Christian 2

Lakeway Christian outhit the Lady Toppers, but it couldn’t overcome a 5-0 deficit, falling to Science Hill. Zoey Shockley had a two-hit day, and McKinley Grubb added a two-out, two-RBI double in the seventh to give the Lions some late life.
