A 1987 comedy-drama play about the bond a group of women share in the small-town South will begin two weekends of performances beginning tonight (Friday).

Encore Theatrical Company is proud to present its production of “Steel Magnolias,” a captivating story of resilience that has charmed audiences for decades in the ways only southern women can.

Performances will be held at the home of Encore Theatrical Company beginning April 17 (tonight) and Saturday, April 18 at 7:30 p.m. For those who want to make time for it next weekend, performances continue on Friday, April 24 and Saturday, April 25.

Matinee performances are scheduled for Sunday, April 19 and Sunday, April 26 at 2:30 p.m.

The theatre is located at 2808 West Andrew Johnson Highway in Morristown.

“Steel Magnolias” follows the lives of six extraordinary women who share laughter, love, and life’s challenges set in their most sacred of spaces, Truvy’s beauty salon. As their bonds are tested through triumph and tragedy, the play reveals the strength found in friendship and the beauty of life’s most tender moments all while looking fabulous.

The original 1987 play dramatized experiences of the family and friends of the playwright following the 1985 death of his sister from diabetic complications after the birth of his namesake nephew and the failure of a family member’s donated kidney. A writer friend continuously encouraged him to write it down in order to come to terms with the experience.

He did but originally as a short story for his nephew then later to get an understanding of the deceased mother.

It evolved in 10 days into the play.

“This production is a celebration of community and the powerful female friendships that get us through life’s toughest times,” said Candace Moore, director of the show. “I think everyone will be able to see themselves in any of these unforgettable characters.”
