Brothers accused of extortion in apparent fake Memphis kidnapping, records show
MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Two brothers are accused of extortion in an apparent fake kidnapping that led the Memphis Police Department (MPD) to issue a missing person report for one of them, records show.
At the center of the missing person report was 25-year-old Deonta White.
Now, there’s a warrant issued for his arrest, records show.
Records show that his brother, 22-year-old Dashawn White, was charged with multiple offenses, including extortion and false reporting, according to his affidavit.
Court documents allege that it started during the early hours of Saturday, April 25, when a woman arrived at an MPD station to report that her ex-boyfriend, Deonta, had been kidnapped. She told police that she got a call the night before from a fake number.
The woman told investigators that she believed the caller to be Dashawn, who informed her that his brother suffered an asthma attack before getting to a car with strangers. Dashawn told the woman that he hadn’t seen his brother since, records allege.
The woman told investigators that shortly after that call, she got a text from Deonta that stated he had been kidnapped and was in the trunk of a car. She then received a Cash App request for $500 from Deonta saying it was ransom — and he would be killed if it wasn’t paid, records allege.
According to court records, Deonta later made a Facebook post, saying, “Kidnapped how?” while flashing a gun in front of the camera. Investigators found Dashawn and asked him about the kidnapping, which he denied and said that he hadn’t been in contact with his brother’s ex-girlfriend. He was detained and brought in for further questioning.
Court records show that investigators had Dashawn video call his brother, Deonta, who said he was never kidnapped and that he didn’t call his ex-girlfriend. Deonta also told police that he didn’t request money from her, adding that multiple people have access to his Cash App account.
The woman provided receipts of the calls and texts from the fake number used to call her and ask for the $500, court records show.
The grandmother of Deonta and Dashawn White told investigators that she received similar calls as the ex-girlfriend did.
On April 25, MPD issued a City Watch alert for Deonta.
Records show that Deonta White has an arrest warrant issued for extortion.
