Dobyns-Bennett scores 8 in the fifth inning to run-rule Lady ‘Canes

KINGSPORT — Kingsport Dobyns-Bennett kept Morristown East softball reeling with a 10-0 triumph Tuesday afternoon.
It wasn’t the total blowout between the two on Monday but the result was the same as the Lady Hurricanes lost their 13th straight to open the season and fell to 0-4 in District One 4A with all of them ending by the mercy rule.
In its four district games, East has now been outscored by 62-1.
Losing pitcher Jaycee Hamilton pitched much better than the final result would indicate. East trailed by only 1-0 after three innings before the home team scored three times in the fourth and then ended it with six in the bottom of the fifth.
Hamilton gave up seven hits and walked there before being relieved by Paige Horner. She was also hurt by several plays the defense failed to make on balls that were catchable and grounders that were just not gloved by infielders.
When you add those factors to the fact East had little or no offensive production, there was no chance for a Lady Hurricanes rally.
In fact, East had only three baserunners with Hamilton’s two-out single in the first, its only hit. Jaelyn Valentine was hit by a pitch in the fourth and Hamilton, the next batter, reached on an error with nobody out.
However, winning hurler Allie McConnellee worked out of the jam and went on to throw a shutout.
McConnellee struck out 11 and didn’t walk a batter in picking up the win.
After two scoreless innings, the Lady Indians, who improved to 17-3 overall and 2-0 in the district, got on the scoreboard when Riley McMillan had a pop fly that ended up as a double and then raced home on a base hit by Laiken Hinson.
In the fourth, the first run scored on an error with hits by McMillan and Hinson plating the other two as the lead grew to 4-0.
After East failed to score with two on and nobody out in the top of the fifth, the Lady Indians ended the game in walk-off fashion.
Braelynn Ferrell led off with a hit before Riley Hughes-LaPovich singled and Mary Kate Lively walked to load the bases. Ashlyn Chappell drew another walk to force in a marker and end the mound duty for Hamilton.
Olivia Aldridge singled in a run and McMillen’s hit scored another pair to make it 8-0. After a base on balls to Hinson, McConnellee laced a double to left field to score the runs that ended the game.
That double was only the second extra-base hit for the Lady Indians.
McMillan, Hinson and McConnellee all had two hits for Dobyns-Bennett.
