Lady Trojans shut out East to complete season sweep

Morristown West scored at least two runs in every inning on its way to a 12-0 rout of cross-town rival East Tuesday afternoon at King Park, giving the Lady Trojans a sweep of the season series between the two.

Eva Boudier set the tone for the game with a leadoff triple and scored as the Lady Trojans scored two in the first. They added four in the second, two in the third and closed it out with four in the fourth frame while banging out 11 hits.

That was way more offense than Coach Chad Parker’s team needed as Mackenzie Lucky hurled a two-hit shutout.

It was the 16th win against seven losses for West and moved the Lady Trojans into third place in the District 1-4A standings with a 3-2 mark.

For the Lady Hurricanes, it was the fourth and final district sweep as they closed the season at 0-8 after being run-ruled in all eight games. East is now 1-19 for the season, matching the school record for most losses in a season. The 2023 team also lost 19 times.

Alyssa Sizemore had three hits with Boudier and Kara Dyke getting two apiece for West.

East played better defensively, but still made three costly errors in the loss.

Lucky did not walk a batter and struck out three in notching the mound verdict over freshman Paige Horner.

A first-inning infield hit by Tayla Brice and Danika Winstead’s single to right-center field in the third were the only Lady Hurricanes’ hits. The only other runner came when Jaycee Hamilton reached on an error in the fourth.

Parker said, “We hit the ball well again today. When Eva gets on it really helps out a lot. She’s starting to hit like she’s capable of and today we hit the ball all the way through the order.

“Mackenzie threw a great ball game,” he added. “It really helps when you don’t walk anybody and we played good defense behind her. It was another big win for us.”

East’s Leslie Clemmons said, “We’re not competing the way we need to right now. There’s too many mistakes on defense and not enough consistency overall.

“At this level, you can’t give extra outs and expect to say in games,” she added. “We have to be more disciplined, throw strikes and play clean softball.

“We’re young and rebuilding and that comes with growing pains but that’s not an excuse. We still expect to compete and execute.”

Clemmons went on to say, “We did have some good at-bats and Danika had a solid hit for us. I thought Paige did a good job of keeping her composure in tough innings when we had errors behind her and Tayla has stepped in at third and is doing a good job of making plays.

“Both Paige and Tayla are showing leadership and toughness and that’s something that we can build on.”

Clemmons closed, “Our girls are still showing up and working and we’re getting valuable experience. It’s on all of us to be better and we’ll get back to work and keep working.”

After Boudier banged her triple off the fence in left she scored as Dyke grounded out. Horner retired the next batter but Adyson Collins wound up on third after the ball bounced past the outfielder. Lynlee McDaniel then singled her across for a 2-0 lead.

In the second, Sizemore’s first hit, an error and a walk by Sydney Mendez loaded the bases. Boudier knocked across two runs with a hit and Kaylynn Milton singled across two more.

Sizemore also started the third with a hit and Lucky walked. After Mendez sacrificed the runners up a base each, Dyke had a two-run double to up the count to 8-0.

In the fourth, Mendez had a hit to knock across a run and two errors on the same ground ball produced the others.
