Unoccupied SUV rolls into duplex

An unoccupied SUV rolled down a hillside and crashed into a Hamblen County duplex Thursday evening, causing significant damage but no injuries, according to East Hamblen Volunteer Fire Department Chief Larry Boatman.
Emergency crews were dispatched shortly after 6 p.m. after an iPhone crash-detection alert. While responders were en route, a second 911 caller reported a vehicle had struck a residence.
Boatman said the SUV rolled from a nearby property before crashing through the rear wall of the duplex.
“It had to pick up speed,” Boatman said. “It busted through the brick wall there.”
No one was inside the vehicle or the portion of the residence impacted by the crash. The American Red Cross was called to assist a family displaced by concerns about the structure’s integrity. The cause of the incident remains under investigation by the Hamblen County Sheriff’s Office.
